The HMS Bounty Cadet Program Home Study Course
The objective of the home study course is make Bounty available to students the world over. By allowing students to study at home they can demonstrate their desire to join this exciting opportunity.- Required reading:
- The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor- available from Amazon.com
- Mutiny on the Bounty - book report; There have been over 2,500 books written about the mutiny, the choice is yours.
- Nautical book and report of your choice: Navigation, Weather, Sailing Theory or Maritime History.
- Three essays, one every two weeks for six weeks, 250 words to be sent in every two weeks:
- What are my life goals? How will the Bounty experience enrich my life?
- Nautical research report; covering some aspect of one of the following subjects: Navigation, Weather, Sailing Theory, Maritime History.
- Essay of your interest, open topic, NON-nautical!
- Required before joining the ship:
- Complete a CPR / First Aid course, preferably both.
- Be able to tie eight knots: Bowline, round turn and two half hitches. square knot, clove hitch, sheet bend, figure eight, rolling hitch, and one of an interesting choice.
- Pass a final exam, open book.
- Knife and marline spike, available from ship.
- Three letters of reference; two from your peers and one from a community leader.
- Some examples of projects to be completed on board the ship.
- Oral report on the nautical research.
- Teach a class how to do a hands on project, your choice. Examples: origami, magic trick, tie a special knot, etc.
- Debate; how can sailing ships enrich humanity?
